Food Waste in Da Nang City of Vietnam: Trends, Challenges, and Perspectives toward Sustainable Resource Use

Food waste has become a critical issue in modern society, especially the urbanized and fast-growing cities of Asia. The increase food serious negative impacts on environmental sustainability, water land resources, security, as well climate greenhouse gas emissions. Through specific case study Da Nang City, Vietnam, this paper examines extent generation at consumption stages, eating habits consumers, from households service establishments, prospects for reuse pig feed. results indicate that per capita increased 0.39 to 0.41kg 2016, 0.46 2017, reached 0.52kg 2018. According our consumer survey, 20% respondents stated they often generate waste, 67% sometimes do, 13% rarely do. Furthermore, 66% surveyed their is collected transported by farmers be used feed pigs. use pigs typical feature Nang. also found there high level awareness willingness participate 3Rs (reduce, reuse, recycle) program, which was being initiated city government. In facilities such resorts hotels, daily 100–200 kg large 20–120 small facilities. This farming. However, been fall demand line with decrease number farms due African swine fever epidemic occurred during implementation study. suggests strong need take both consumer-oriented prevention management measures, segregation source introduction effective recycling techniques, ensure can safely sustainably “valuable resource” rather than “wasted.”
